Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he loved playing different card games at a young age. He found himself becoming very competitive in the above-mentioned card games as he was competing against his dad. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little while and headed to New York to compete in some formidable chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were difficult as he would play extensive hours and do not win most times. He made some extra cash by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he might better his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to get more sleep and focus more on the game.
The actual advancement in his skills began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would often challenge each other. Howard was able to access some of the greatest players in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his strategic thinking techniques. Howard used these strategy concepts in the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.
Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie was an excellent student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard Lederer told Annie to move out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie Duke is one of the best women players the poker world ever. Howard moved to Sin City in 1993 and played money games for the next 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to compete in more tournaments.
