Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. One more sequence of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens and then the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where some players often get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to utilize precisely three cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same concept in almost every poker game.
A lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand wins the complete pot.
It may seem complex at first, following a few rounds you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an amazing assortment of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have many individuals battling for the high, and many shooting for the low. If you prefer a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
